Recorded in 1983, the production showcases director Achim Freyer’s style–a sort of postmodern cabaret–as much…

Matter of Glorious Trial: Spiritual and Material Substance in Paradise Lost

Matter of Glorious Trial: Spiritual and Material Substance in Paradise Lost

$55

This groundbreaking book, the first to examine Milton’s thinking about matter and substance throughout his entire poetic career, seeks to alter the prevailing critical view that Milton was a monist-materialist—one who believes that all things are composed of material and all phenomena (including consciousness) are the result of material interactions. Based on her close study of the philosophical movements of Milton’s mind, Sugimura discovers the “fluid intermediaries” in his poetry that are neither strictly material nor immaterial. In doing so, Sugimura uses Paradise Lost as a fascinating window into the intersection of literature and philosophy, and of literary studies and intellectual history. Sugimura finds that Milton displays a tense and ambiguous relationship with the idealistic dualism of Plato and the materialism of Aristotle and she argues for a more nuanced interpretation of Milton’s metaphysics.

Totalitarianism and Political Religions, Volume II

Totalitarianism and Political Religions, Volume II

$175

Available for the first time in English language translation, the third volume of Totalitarianism and Political Religions completes the set. It provides a comprehensive overview of key theories and theorists of totalitarianism and of political religions, from Hannah Arendt and Raymond Aron to Leo Strauss and Simone Weill. Edited by the eminent Professor Hans Maier, it represents a major study, examining how new models for understanding political history arose from the experience of modern despotic regimes. Where volumes one and two were concerned with questioning the common elements between twentieth century despotic regimes – Communism, Fascism, National Socialism, Maoism – this volume draws a general balance. It brings together the findings of research undertaken during the decade 1992-2002 with the cooperation of leading philosophers, historians and social scientists for the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Munich.Following the demise of Italian Fascism (1943-45), German National Socialism (1945) and Soviet Communism (1989-91), a comparative approach to the three regimes is possible. A broad field of interpretation of the entire phenomenon of totalitarian and political religions opens up. This comprehensive study examines a vast topic which affects the political and historical landscape over the whole of the last century. Moreover, dictatorships and their motivations are still present in current affairs, today in the twenty-first century. The three volumes of Totalitarianism and Political Religions are a vital resource for scholars of fascism, Nazism, communism, totalitarianism, comparative politics and politicaltheory.

'Greek' Thomson: Neo-Classical Architectural Theory, Buildings and Interiors

‘Greek’ Thomson: Neo-Classical Architectural Theory, Buildings and Interiors

$174.57

Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson is at last being recognised as an architect of genius, comparable in stature to Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Now in paperback, this is the first book in which a team of distinguished architectural commentators and historians use the latest research in the area to illuminate the full range of Thomson’s talents. Thomson emerges not just as a great architect, but as a towering intellect whose theory and practice synthesised the best thought of his time in architectural history, aesthetic philosophy and, not least, theology. With an introduction by the late Sir John Summerson, and over 200 illustrations including an 8-page color section, this volume celebrates the work of arguably the greatest exponent of the Greek Revival.

'Nature and the Greeks' and 'Science and Humanism'

‘Nature and the Greeks’ and ‘Science and Humanism’

$33.99

Nobel laureate Erwin Schrodinger was one of the most distinguished scientists of the twentieth century; his lectures on the history and philosophy of science are legendary. ‘Nature and the Greeks and Science and Humanism’ makes available for the first time in many years the text of two of Schrodinger’s most famous lecture series. Nature and the Greeks offers a comprehensive historical account of the twentieth-century scientific world picture, tracing modern science back to the earliest stages of Western philosophic thought. Science and Humanism addresses some of the most fundamental questions of the century: what is the value of scientific research; and how do the achievements of modern science affect the relationship between material and spiritual matters? A foreword by Roger Penrose sets the lectures in a contemporary context, and affirms that they are as relevant today as when they were first published.

'Pataphysics: The Poetics of an Imaginary Science

‘Pataphysics: The Poetics of an Imaginary Science

$24.95

‘Pataphysics, the pseudoscience imagined by Alfred Jarry, has so far, because of its academic frivolity and hermetic perversity, attracted very little scholarly or critical inquiry, and yet it has inspired a century of experimentation. Tracing the place of ‘pataphysics in the tangled history of the relationship between science and poetry, Christian Bök demonstrates that ‘pataphysics is fundamental to the nature of the postmodern. Bök considers the work of Jarry, ‘pataphysician, both by itself and as it influenced work by later generations. Discussing ‘pataphysics in general and Jarry’s work in particular as a ludic counterpart of Nietzschean philosophy, Bök examines the relationship of rule and chance, of science and poetry, of the rational and the surrational. His work draws on a wide range of reading in poetry and theory to establish a firm historical ground for understanding the influence of ‘pataphysics, making a variety of seemingly difficult or obscure material accessible in a charming, poetic manner. A long overdue critical look at a significant strain of the twentieth-century avant-garde, ‘Pataphysics: The Poetics of an Imaginary Science raises important historical, cultural, and theoretical issues germane to the production and reception of poetry, the ways we think about, write, and read it, and the sorts of claims it makes upon our understanding.

'This Earthly Stage': World and State in Late Medieval and Early Modern England

‘This Earthly Stage’: World and State in Late Medieval and Early Modern England

$191.71

The thirteen essays collected in This Earthly Stage explore intersections between the world as stage and the stage as world in late medieval and early modern England. This collection features studies of stages both familiar and unfamiliar, and worlds old and new – from the ritual performance of funerals for the fifteenth-century London elite to the electronic recreation of Shakespeare on the internet. The collected essays engage with a variety of scholarly fields, including art and iconography, cultural and social history, digital humanities, literature, myth, philology, and philosophy. This volume offers a valuable contribution to contemporary medieval and early modern studies, with a particular interest for those researching and teaching early modern English drama and culture.

1 & 2 Peter

$29.99

"Doug Harink’s commentary on the Petrine epistles aptly demonstrates the guiding principle of the series to which this volume belongs: ‘dogma clarifies rather than obscures.’ While paying close attention to the biblical text, Harink also opens up for the reader interconnected vistas in patristics, speculative theology, ethics, politics, philosophy, and aesthetics, as well as ’some of the treasures of Orthodoxy.’ The book is especially helpful in that it speaks to the generalist while also refusing to back off from some of the more controversial passages in these biblical books. Even where the reader does not agree, he or she will not be bored!"–Edith M. Humphrey, William F. Orr Professor of New Testament, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"No theologian over the past decade has been more concerned to articulate the apocalyptic heart of the gospel faithfully than Doug Harink. In this commentary, Harink brings that concern to bear on the message of 1 & 2 Peter. The result is a passionate book that allows Peter to take his place alongside Paul as an apostle of God’s world-transforming apocalypse in Jesus Christ. By way of insightful and provocative engagement with Petrine scholarship, contemporary theology, and critical theory, Harink brings the message of Peter into challenging conversation with the Constantinianism of contemporary North American culture. To those who feel acutely the weight of living as ‘exiles of the Diaspora’ in our culture today, the words of Harink’s book will break forth as an indispensable, powerful witness to the decisive and liberating grace alone by which we live into the ‘holiness and godliness’ that Peter names as a sign of the coming new creation in Christ."–Nathan R. Kerr, author of Christ, History and Apocalyptic: The Politics of Christian Mission; assistant professor of theology and philosophy, Trevecca Nazarene University

$20

101 Reasons to Own the World’s Greatest Investment: Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway

$19.95

“It took me thirty years of doing everything else first before I found Berkshire. My intent is to share my experience to help you reach your goal much faster.”-Robert P. MilesMuch has been written about the “Sage of Omaha,” Warren Buffett, and the philosophy that made him the most successful investor in history. Yet very little has been made public about Berkshire Hathaway, the NYSE publicly traded investment vehicle that is the hub of Buffett’s financial empire. With this book, longtime shareholder and acknowledged Berkshire Hathaway expert Robert P. Miles fills that gap for investors. With the second largest net worth in the world, Berkshire Hathaway’s $100 billion- plus market value currently surpasses that of such blue-chip giants as Dell, Home Depot, AT&T, Disney, Ford, Gillette, American Express, McDonald’s, and GM. Over the past two decades, Berkshire Hathaway has consistently outperformed the S&P Index by approximately three-to-one, and, not only has the company never posted a negative return, it has achieved double-digit performance in all but four years since 1965. Thirty years ago, a hundred shares of Berkshire Class A Common Stock cost less than $1,000. Today, that same hundred shares is worth over $7 million. Although Berkshire Class A (NYSE:BRK.A) is the highest priced stock on the NYSE, Berkshire Class B shares (NYSE:BRK.B) are now available for 1/30th the price. What is the secret behind Berkshire’s phenomenal success? How is it possible that a relatively obscure company, held by fewer than 20,000 registered shareholders and managed by Buffett and an administrative staff of twelve employees, consistently outperforms the top mutual funds by a wide margin? In 101 Reasons to Own the World’s Greatest Investment, Robert Miles provides complete answers to these questions. He takes a close look at the Buffett philosophy, and he provides a unique insider’s view of the inner workings of Berkshire Hathaway. Among other little-known facts,

Excerpt: The National University of Cordoba, Spanish: (UNC), is the oldest university in Argentina, and the second in the Americas. It is located in Córdoba, the capital of Córdoba Province. Since the early 20th century it has been the second largest university in the country (after the University of Buenos Aires) in terms of the number of students, faculty, and academic programs. As the location of the first university founded in the land that is now Argentina, Córdoba has earned the nickname La Docta (roughly translated, “The Learned Lady”). In 1610 the Society of Jesus founded the Collegium Maximum in Córdoba, which was attended by students of the order. An institution of the highest intellectual caliber for the time, this was the precursor of the university. While still under the control of the Jesuits, and during the administration of Bishop Juan Fernando de Trejo y Sanabria, advanced studies began to be offered at what was now known as the Colegio Maximo de Córdoba. The school did not yet have authority to confer degrees. This milestone would be soon reached; on August 8, 1621 Pope Gregory XV granted this authority by an official document, which arrived in the city in April 1622. With this authorization, and with the approval of the church hierarchy and the provincial head of the Jesuits, Pedro de Oñate, the university began its official existence. This also marks the beginning of the history of higher education in Argentina. The Jesuits remained in control of the university until 1767, when they were expelled by order of King Carlos III. Leadership then passed to the Franciscan order. For the first 150 years after its founding, the university maintained an exclusive focus on philosophy and theology. In 1687, under the aegis of the

18 Unconventional Essays on the Nature of Mathematics

18 Unconventional Essays on the Nature of Mathematics

$69.95

This book collects some of the most interesting recent writings that are tackling, from various points of view, the problem of giving an accounting of the nature, purpose, and justification of real mathematical practice–mathematics as actually done by real live mathematicians. What is the nature of the objects being studied? What determines the directions and styles in which mathematics progresses (or, perhaps, degenerates)? What certifies its claim to certainty, or to a priori status, to independence of experience? Why is mathematics the same for all times and places, or is it really the same, or in what senses is it the same and in what senses different? Many of these writings were read at conferences in Europe and America under the heading of “history” or “cultural studies” as well as “philosophy.” It is the editor’s hope to help foster healthy interdisciplinary mutual aid in this young and fertile area.REUBEN HERSH is professor emeritus at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He is the recipient (with Martin Davis) of the Chauvenet Prize and (with Edgar Lorch) the Ford Prize. Hersh is the author (with Philip J. Davis) of The Mathematical Experience and Descartes’ Dream, which won the National Book Award in l983, and What is Mathematics, Really?

Written in 1820 for Laurette Tighe, a daughter of friends of Percy and Mary Shelley, Mary Shelley tried to have it published by her father, William Godwin, but he refused. The text was lost until 1997, when a manuscript copy was rediscovered in Italy, exciting both the scholarly community and the general public. Maurice tells the story of a boy searching for a home and his encounters with a traveller who turns out to be his long-lost father. The story is narrated in a melancholy tone from several points of view and focuses on the theme of loss, particularly the separation of parents and children. Shelley explored this partly autobiographical theme in other works written at the time, including her novel Mathilda and her play Proserpine. The story’s straightforward language reflects that of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth, whose works Shelley was reading while she composed Maurice. Laurette twenty years after Mary Shelley wrote Maurice for her.In 1814, the seventeen-year-old Mary Shelley (Mary Godwin, at the time) ran off with Percy Bysshe Shelley to continental Europe, accompanied by Claire Clairmont, Mary’s stepsister. After six weeks of travelling, they returned to England but continued to live together. Mary returned pregnant with Percy’s child, but their infant daughter died soon after her premature birth. Percy was alienated from his family and received little financial

36 Strategies of the Chinese for Financial Traders

36 Strategies of the Chinese for Financial Traders

$45

Ancient strategies provide a valuable link to enhance your ability to survive and prosper in modern financial markets. In this fascinating book, experienced trader and best-selling author Daryl Guppy explains how The 36 Strategies of the Chinese are applied to trading financial markets. In trading there is rarely a single answer to any trading situation. The best answer, and its effective application, depends on the trader. The strategies by themselves do not guarantee success. The trader’s skill in analyzing and assessing the situation determines how effective he is in selecting and applying the right strategy.Guppy was introduced to the book of The 36 Strategies of the Chinese by a Chinese friend. An ancient and classic text, it is a compilation of political and military strategies dating back more than 1800 years, drawn from classic Chinese poetry, history, philosophy, biographies and novels. This book includes specific methods for active investors and traders that are consistent with the meaning of the original ancient strategies. The 36 Strategies of the Chinese for Financial Traders follow the structure of the original 36 Strategies of the Chinese. The first 18 strategies are applied when you have the advantage — the luxury of time and resources to examine techniques to recognize and maximize the return from these market opportunities. The second 18 strategies are applied when you are at a disadvantage — they are strategies used against investors and traders to inhibit success. Many of the strategies are enhanced using derivatives.
